President-elect John Dramani Mahama has mandated the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Parliamentary Leadership to nominate Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin as Speaker of the 9th Parliament.
This was contained in a press statement issued by Mr. Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Aide to the President-elect. According to the release, the decision was made in consultation with the National Executive and Parliamentary Leadership of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
It noted that the Rt. Hon. Bagbin, a veteran politician, has had a distinguished career in Parliament, serving as Member of Parliament for Nadowli, Minority and Majority leader, and currently as Speaker of the 8th Parliament. His wealth of experience would be crucial in guiding the affairs of Parliament during this critical period in Ghana’s democratic development, the release stated.
The President-elect Mahama also expressed confidence that under the Rt. Hon. Bagbin’s leadership, Ghana’s Parliament will be strengthened to deliver effectively on its oversight responsibilities, the statement added.
Meanwhile, the Speaker, in a separate statement, expressed appreciation to the President-elect for the confidence reposed in him and pledged to judiciously discharge his mandate to strengthen Parliament and ensure smooth government business.
The Speaker, together with the MPs-elect, will be sworn-in on the midnight of January 7, marking the beginning of a new chapter in Ghana’s democratic journey.
