Hundreds of workers from various labour unions under the Trade Union Congress (TUC) in the Volta Region gathered today, 1st May at the Jubilee Park in Ho to celebrate this year’s Labour Day.

Most of the workers held placards with various inscriptions charging the government to work towards the attainment of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Labour groups such as Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA), National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT), MidWife Association, Tertiary Workers Union (TEWU) among others marched at the event displaying inscriptions such as, “Pay your taxes promptly”, “More taxes better health facilities”, “Equip Midwives to reduce maternal and infant mortality”

Other inscriptions said: “Mr. President ECG is better than Meralco, Don’t exchange your VIP with Tico Car”,  “Use the oil revenue to provide infrastructure”, “Say no to homosexuality”,  “Civil and local government workers are tired of revamp posting”

Volta Regional Minister, Dr. Archibald Yao Letsa in his address at the durbar, welcomed all who have travelled from far and near, to grace the occasion and thanked them on behalf of Government for their good work for mother Ghana.

He touched on the theme for the celebration, “Sustainable Development Goals and Decent Work: The Role of Social Partners” saying, all hands must be on deck in order for the country to make progress.

“It is imperative for Organized Labour to resolve to do everything possible and necessary to partner government and lend your unflinching support to accelerate the growth and development of the economy to create more jobs which will lead to an improved standard of living for our people.

The Minister also assured of government’s commitment in providing safe and clean working environment for each worker and called for the support of the workers to make that dream, a reality.

Aside the labour unions, Municipal and District Chief Executives (MDCEs) from the region, bigwigs of the ruling party, directors of various Institutions and other dignitaries made time to participate in the celebration.
