Ketu South NDC Raises Concerns over NIA Registration

By: Nelson Ayivor | Voltaonlinegh |

The opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Ketu South Constituency of the Volta Region is livid over what it says are attempts by some officials of the National Identification Authority (NIA) to politicise the ongoing Ghana Card registration in the municipality.

In a communiqué issued on Tuesday, July 30 by the Constituency Communications Officer, Bright Dzila, the NDC bemoaned the undesirable conducts of some NIA officials who it alleged were known card bearing members of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) bent on deliberately frustrating the public and abusing the registration process for political expediency.

The communiqué said, “we have received tonnes of complaints about the priority been extended to NPP members to register at the expense of the general public.”

“We have also received overwhelming reports about delays in issuing the cards and in some instances, turning down potential registrants on the flimsy excuse of not being captured in the supposed ceiling of 30 people per day,” it added.

The release further stated that some NIA officials stationed at Adina, a fishing community in the municipality usually closed at 1:30pm, hours before the stipulated 5pm.

The NDC is therefore calling on the NIA boss, Prof. Ken Attafuah to immediately address these issues in order to facilitate the smooth conduct of the exercise in the municipality. It also hopes to see a radical change in the conduct of the NIA officials.

Meanwhile, the Ketu South Constituency Chairman, NPP, Samuel Petit Haligah in an interview with local radio stations in reaction to the release, described the NDC’s claims as concocted saying that nothing untoward was happening and that the exercise was going on smoothly without any problems.
