President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo on Wednesday delivered his final State of the Nation Address to Parliament, touting his administration’s achievements and leaving behind a legacy of a working Ghana.
“I leave behind a Ghana that is working,” President Akufo-Addo declared, as he reflected on his eight-year tenure. The President highlighted significant gains in the economy, infrastructure development, education, and job creation.Ghana’s economy, he noted, had recovered strongly, with a GDP growth rate of 7.2 percent in the third quarter of 2024.
In the area of infrastructure, President Akufo-Addo cited the construction of over 12,000 kilometers of roads and numerous interchanges, as well as the transformation of the Takoradi Harbour into a world-class facility.
The Free SHS and Free TVET policies, he said, had enabled 5.7 million young Ghanaians to access secondary education, while initiatives like the National Entrepreneurship and Innovation Programme (NEIP) and the Ghana Enterprises Agency had supported 1.6 million Ghanaians and created over 100,000 jobs.
He further highlighted the progress made on the Agenda 111 hospitals project, with three hospitals already completed. He expressed his hope that his successor will complete the remaining projects to strengthen Ghana’s healthcare infrastructure.
President Akufo-Addo however acknowledged that challenges still existed, including the ongoing conflict in Bawku and the need to combat corruption.
He expressed gratitude to Ghanaians for the opportunity to serve and congratulated President-elect John Dramani Mahama on his victory.
The President’s farewell speech marked the beginning of a transition period, as Ghana prepares for the inauguration of a new administration led by President-elect John Mahama and his NDC party on January 7, 2025.
