Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection, Cynthia Morrison has entreated Ghanaians to ignore a CNN documentary which sought to give a wrong impression that there is child slavery on the Volta Lake.
According to Madam Morrison, the story being circulated on social media does not represent the actual situation when she visited communities along the Volta Lake as part of her working tours of riverine communities.
Speaking to Voltaonlinegh.com, she admitted that child slavery on the lake was practised some years ago but no longer the case following the arrest and prosecution of some two persons involved in the practice.
She detailed that children who were rescued had been reunited with their family while others were sent to shelter homes.
The Minister called on the Member of Parliament for Krachi East and Deputy Minister of Water and Sanitation, Michael Gyato and the Krachi East Municipal Assembly to ensure that Dambai lakeside becomes the cleanest to attract investors to the capital of the Oti Region.
In response, the Municipal Chief Executive for the area, Patrick Jilima assured that plans were far advanced to make Dambai lakeside the cleanest one in the country.
Some boat and business operators at Dambai agreed that if the lakeside was clean, it would boost business activities in the area.
They disclosed that travelers on several occasions refused to buy their wares due to the heavy filth that has engulfed the lakeside.
