Former Deputy Minister Joins Ketu South Parliamentary Race

Former Deputy Minister for Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, Dzifa Abla Gomashie has picked nomination form to contest the upcoming parliamentary primaries of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Ketu South Constituency of the Volta Region.

Speaking to reporters on Friday, July 12 at the forecourt of the party’s constituency office at Aflao, Madam Gomashie said she considered her decision to represent the constituency in Parliament as divine because no woman had ever made it to Parliament from the southern part of the region.

The Deputy Minister in the Mahama Administration tipped to win the primaries by over 80 per cent of the constituents according to opinion polls conducted by an independent group (Scorpion Research), noted that “women have never represented us in Parliament, we need to change the narrative and inspire the young women to dare to be anything they want to be, we want them to look at what we have done and build upon it.”

She observed that in other jurisdictions women occupied high public and political positions such as presidents and prime ministers hence, the need to empower women to aspire to greater heights adding, she was inspired by the fact that many young women considered her as their role model and that she would continue to play that same role even in Parliament.

She noted that having served in government and acquired some experiences from the 31st December Women’s Movement, she felt well positioned to join the competition to represent  the people adding,  there were some things a woman could do and do it well.

“I am convinced that I will win this election. I have no doubt in my mind that the people of this constituency believe in me and know that if given the opportunity, I will do the very best that I can.”

Madam Gomashie disclosed that during her tenure as Deputy Minister, she saw the difficulties and challenges she faced as opportunities to think outside the box and do something extraordinary saying that becoming a member of Parliament (MP) would put her directly in charge of the affairs of the constituency to take decisions that would inure to the benefit of the good people of the constituency.

She promised to abide by all the rules guiding the conduct of campaign activities ahead of the primaries, unite members of the party by running an all-inclusive campaign so that “we can work for the NDC to win the 2020 general elections”  and bring prosperity and development to the people.

The Development Queen of Avoeme in the Aflao Traditional Area was accompanied by scores of supporters, party faithful and well-wishers who described her as the “Deborah of Ketu South” and were all optimistic that she would emerge victorious to represent the constituents in the 2020 general elections.

Madam Gomashie will be contesting seven others, Foga Nukunu, Joseph Kwasi Nyavi, Nicholas Worclachie, Caroline Kudah-Parker, Joseph Kofi Kporha, Godson Bill Ocloo and Sylvester Kafui Nyasorgbor. Meanwhile, the incumbent MP, Fiifi Fiavi Kwetey has decided to bow out.
