Energy Minister and NPP Candidate for Hohoe, John-Peter Amewu has secured a historic win in Monday’s parliamentary elections with 5,131 vote margin.
Mr. Amewu beat off stiff competition from the NDC’s Prof. Margaret Kweku to annex the once opposition safe seat to the camp the governing NPP, for the first time since the beginning of the 4th republic.
He polled 26,952 votes as against the NDC’s 21,821 votes, overturning the party’s almost 29,000 vote deficit in the 2016 elections to clinch the historic feat on his their attempt at the seat.
Mr. Amewu just as his contender, served as an MCE for Hohoe under erstwhile Kufuor led NPP government between 2001 and 2009 . He also served as the Regional chairman of the NPP between 2014 and 2017, before being appointed as Minister for Lands and Natural Resources on the assumption of the Akufo-Addo government in January 2017.
Meanwhile, President Akufo-Addo has made significant gains in the presidential race in the area, securing as much as 14,389 votes compared to his 2016 performance of 6,869 votes. However, The NDC’s John Mahama witnessed a marginal decline in his 2016 performance of 35,117 votes to 33,542 votes in 2020.
