Ho: Residents Scramble for Water as GWCL Struggles to Restore Supply

BY: Lambert Coffie | VoltaOnline

The Ho Municipality is facing a severe water crisis, leaving residents and businesses struggling to access the essential commodity.

The Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) shut down its Kpeve headworks for emergency repairs on January 1, 2025, resulting in a prolonged water shortage in the area.

Residents have been forced to rely on alternative sources, including wells and private tanker services, which come at a significant cost.

Food vendors, who rely heavily on water for their daily operations, are among the hardest hit. “We are struggling to get water for cooking and cleaning, and it’s affecting our business and customers,” Seyram, a food vendor at the Ho lorry station, told VoltaOnline.

The situation, this news portal gathered, is also affecting health facilities, which are relying on water reservoirs that may soon run dry if the supply is not restored quickly.

Public health officials are warning of a potential outbreak of waterborne diseases, such as cholera and typhoid, if the situation is not addressed promptly.

“The situation is dire, and we urge residents to take precautions and maintain good hygiene practices to prevent the spread of diseases,” Vivian, a Public Health practitioner, told VoltaOnline in an interview.

Despite assurances from GWCL that its emergency response team is working to repair the fault and restore water supply as soon as possible, residents are growing impatient, and the situation is becoming increasingly dire.

Bishop Mante Mounts Pressure on IGP Over Indian Missionary Priests’ Assault Case

BY: Daniel Orlando | VoltaOnline

The Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Jasikan, Most Rev. Gabriel Akwasi Ababio Mante, has written an open letter to the Inspector General of Police (IGP), expressing concern over the delayed arrest and prosecution of individuals involved in the brutal assault of three Indian Catholic priests at Nkwanta in the Oti Region.

Frs. Robinson Melkis, Martin George, and Henry Jacob of the Franciscan Capuchin Order were on December 11, 2024 assaulted at a fuel station, while fueling a bulldozer they had hired from the Municipal Assembly, after being mistakenly accused of stealing the equipment. Fr. Henry Jacob suffered a broken left eardrum in the attack and has since returned to India for further medical treatment.

Bishop Mante, in whose jurisdiction, the missionaries were working, expressed frustration over the lack of arrests despite clear video evidence of the incidence. While, acknowledging the IGP’s prompt intervention in facilitating Fr. Jacob’s medical treatment at Police Hospital, the Bishop questioned the efficiency of the Ghana Police Service and raised concerns that justice might be hindered because the victims are foreign nationals.

The bishop also described the attack as a violation of the priests’ rights and a threat to peaceful coexistence, as he warned of potential diplomatic repercussions between Ghana and India if the case remains unresolved, emphasizing the need for justice to prevent further damage to Ghana’s international reputation.

Bishop Mante further expressed concern over post-election violence in Ghana, urging authorities to establish effective mechanisms to curb such incidents.

WAEC Releases 2024 WASSCE Provisional Results After Govt Partially Clears Debt

BY: Lambert Coffie | VoltaOnline

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has finally released the provisional results for the 2024 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for school candidates in Ghana.

This comes after weeks of negotiations with the government over its outstanding debt to WAEC, which had delayed the marking and release of results.

The government’s payment of GHS 60 million, part of its over GHS 160 million indebtedness to WAEC, paved the way for the release of the results. This move would enable candidates to meet the tertiary admission deadlines.

According to Mr. John Kapi, Head of Public Affairs at WAEC, candidates and heads of schools can access the results via the WAEC website, using login credentials provided to school authorities. He also urged candidates to be cautious of fraudsters claiming to upgrade results for a fee, emphasizing that results can be verified using WAEC’s QR code verification system.

This year’s examination saw a total of 460,611 candidates from 1,003 schools register for the exams, marking a 2.66% increase compared to 2023. Unfortunately, 4,609 candidates (1%) were absent. The results show varying performances in core subjects, with English Language and Social Studies recording the highest pass rates.
