Head Coach of Volta Beach Soccer Team, Julius Caesar Beckley has told TalksenseSports, “it wasn’t easy beating Greater Accra in the 2018 Beach Soccer Unity Cup.”

Team Volta defeated the defending champions 4-3 on penalties to lift the second edition of the Unity Cup at the Laboma Beach Arena, in La on Friday, May 25, 2018.

Being runners up in the first edition, Team Volta put in much effort to achieve their target of winning the cup through the group A stages, where they saw off teams like Central (2-0), and Eastern (5-1).

Greater Accra in the other group (B) had to also beat Western, 6-1 and managed a 3-2 penalty shootout victory against Ashanti after a 2-all regulation results.

Caesar, proud of his team’s performance, said the commitment to their target won the game for them.

“On a more serious note, winning the cup was our target before the competition begun. In the maiden edition, we were in the finals and lost to Greater Accra. They have quality players, most of whom are in the national team, the Black Sharks; they also have the national and assistant coaches. They are the defending champions as well as playing at home so it was very difficult but we put all our efforts into that game and it paid off. I feel so proud of myself and also proud of my players.”

This year’s Unity cup, dubbed the Sports Festival, which was played on the African Union Day, saw 2 new participating regions, Ashanti and Eastern.

The National Beach Soccer Super League which saw four exciting seasons some years back is hopeful to bounce back in late June in the Western Region.

Meanwhile, defending champions and 3-time winners, Sunset Sports Keta, will be participating in a tournament in Nigeria in June, to prepare for the league.

Volta, have had teams like Sunset Sports Keta, Havedzi Mighty Warriors, and Tegbi Youth who pulled out in the second round of the last edition of the league.
