Dr. Letsa Lauds UHAS for Projecting Volta’s Image Positively

The Volta Regional minister, Dr Archibald Yao Letsa has disclosed that, the coming into being of the University of Health and Allied Sciences  (UHAS) has brought positive radiance and attention unto the region, aside its impact on the country’s healthcare delivery system.

According to him, the establishment of UHAS in 2011, has not only brought healthcare education to the door steps of many in the region, but has also projected the name and image of the Volta region positively.

The minister who was speaking at th 4th Congregation of the university over the weekend, thus urged citizens of the region to pride themselves in the growth  of UHAS and support its continuous development.

While reiterating government’s commitment towards addressing the various infrastructural and logistical challenges of the university, Dr. Letsa promised to institute an award scheme for the best medical student in paediatrics, when the university graduates its first set of medical doctors.

A total of 803 students including three foreign students graduated from the university following a successfully completion of their various programmes of study in the 2018/19 academic year.

The ceremony which was held in the Cedi auditorium at the UHAS main campus at Sokode-Lokoe near Ho had graduands from the Schools of Allied Health Sciences, Public Health, Medicine, Nursing and Midwifery.

Justice Jones Mawulorm Dotse, UHAS council chairman commended the graduands for their tenacity and discipline in completing their programmes, and urged them be worthy ambassadors of the university.

He assured all stakeholders of the university’s commitment to attaining its vision of being a preeminent healthcare training institution within the West African subregion.

The Vice Chancellor, Professor John Gyapong in his address, noted that the university was making modest but impactful strides in delivering on its mandate as a foremost institution for the training of quality healthcare professionals.

This, he said has resulted in the ranking of UHAS as the12th best university in Ghana,  by the Ranking Web of Universities worldwide (Webometrics).

According to him, the recognition would serve as a morale booster for the dynamic staff and management of the young university, whiles they work to be among  top 5  rankings in the next five years.

The Vice Chancellor further noted that, despite the infrastructural inadequacies, the university continuous to attract many more students, as well specialists and consultants, following the conversion of the Volta Regional Hospital into a Teaching Hospital to aid the practical training of medical students.

The University, in addressing some of the immediate infrastructure needs, has self financed the construction of six additional consulting rooms, a lecture block and staff offices at the trafalgar (hospital) campus, which hosts the school of Medicine, Prof. Gyapong stated.

He however urged government to expedite the completion of the some ongoing Getfund projects at the central and Hohoe campuses, whiles they await the start of the Chinese government funded UHAS Phase two project, which comprises a central administration and the school of Nursing and Midwifery.

In addition, Prof. Gyapong called for immediate action on the access roads to the main campus, which remain a major challenge to motorists.

Prof. Angela Ofori-Atta, Head of Department of Psychiatry at the University of Ghana School of Medicine and Destistry, who was the guest speaker challenged the graduands to exhibit high level of integrity in their practice and positively impact society with the knowledge and skills acquired.
