Sibi Hilltop Residents Suffer Acute Water Shortage

BY: Benjamin Owusu I Voltaonlinegh.com |

A perennial problem of water shortage in Sibi Hilltop and it’s environs in the Nkwanta North District of Oti Region, is said to be particularly severe this year.

After several complaints and reports filed about water crisis in the area, residents of Sibi Hilltop, Sibi Central and other farming communities have been hit with acute water shortage compelling men, women and children to travel far looking for water.

The situation, has compelled communities members to travel either to Kpassa or Damanko, a distance of more than eight (8) kilometers before having access to portable water for their house chores.

A visit to the area underscored that, the situation was affecting human activities as children and women were seen loitering around the community helplessly struggling for water.

The struggle from ditches was disheartening, posing health danger to the people.

Speaking with residents in the area, they expressed worry at the plight of struggling to cope with the situation as they fear they may contract diseases from the available polluted water sources.

They complain that “we have to wake up as early as 12:00 am to look for water but the search is a dream which has never realized.”

They are therefore calling on the government, NGOs, individuals and other organisations to come to their aid and help solve the water problem.

However, the assembly member for the area, Abraham Tabante, lamented over the situation after several complaints to the assembly and the successive government to ensure water supply to the communities, had proven futile.

He said, this is hard for them as the nearest source of potable water is six kilometers away, at Damanko.

He called on the authorities to act quickly to prevent the area from being affected by any waterborne disease.
