The Acting General Secretary of Industrial and Commercial Workers Union (ICU), Ghana, Mr Morgan Ayawine has told workers across the country to freely and willingly join Trade Unions to protect their interest.
According to him, no employer has the power to prevent any employee from joining a trade union or any association of his or her choice.
This, he noted was a right guaranteed and protected by the supreme law of the land, the 1992 constitution of Ghana. Hence, must be freely exercised by workers and adhered to by employers without fear or favour.
Mr Morgan Ayawine made the call in Ho, the Volta Regional Capital when he addressed the delegates conference of the Volta Chapter of ICU – Ghana.
The Labour Act 2003 (Act 651) states among others that ” Every Worker has the right to join a trade union of his/her choice for the promotion of the workers economic and social interests.”
To this end, he cautioned employers and management staff to desist from banning intimidating trade union groups within their organisations.
He added that the unions also protect the interest of employers by ensuring employees discharge their duties appropriately in advancing the cause of the organisation.
The Delegate Conference which brought together industry players and union members in the Volta Region was also used to reaffirm the incumbent executives for another term in office after exhibiting good leadership.
Mr Morgan Ayawine urged the reaffirmed executives to always put the interest of the members first because by serving the members’ interest, their personal interest will also be served.
The conference also discussed issues regarding ways to get the government to improve the condition of service of workers in the country.
The Regional ICU Chairman, Bright Amedume expressed his appreciation to union members for the confidence reposed in them and called for continued unity and cooperation from all members to better the lot of ICU in Volta and Ghana at large.
