Sibi Residents Cry for Potable Water

Residents of Sibi, a farming community in the Nkwanta North District of the Volta Region, have made a passionate appeal to the assembly, philanthropists and corporate organisations to provide them with potable water to safeguard their health.

According to them, lack of good drinking water in the community has compelled over 3,000 households in Sibi to depend on contaminated water from dugouts for domestic activities including drinking and cooking.

The residents attributed the situation to a number of diseases such as diarrhea, typhoid, tuberculosis, among others which the people in the community mostly suffer from.

A visit by this reporter to the community revealed that the village folks, especially women and children had to walk for long distances to fetch water from the dugout for their household chores.

Some school children in the community lamented about the absence of potable water in the community saying, it was among other things, affecting their academic performance.

According to them, teachers kept refusing posting to the area making the few teachers available stressed  up as they had to take on more tasks, thus, telling on their delivery.

They appealed to the authorities to come to their aid to alleviate their suffering.

Speaking to the Chief of Sibi, Nana Gmanja Nimoar III said since the establishment of the community, they have never had access to good drinking water adding that the situation had led to some people suffering from serious water-borne diseases in the area.

He therefore called on the authorities to provide them with good drinking water to release them of the stress of having to walk for miles in search of contaminated water.

Meanwhile, District Chief Executive for Nkwanta North, Jackson Kwame Jakayi in reaction, noted that his outfit was working closely with regional water management to extend potable water to the Sibi community.
